Ingredients

For the Treats
  • 3 tablespoons Butter
  • 1 package Marshmallows (10 oz)
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
For Decoration
  • 1 cup White candy melts
  • 1/4 cup Red candy melts
  • 1/4 cup Blue candy melts
  • 1 teaspoon Vegetable shortening (optional, for thinning candy melts)
  • Red Food coloring (gel recommended)
  • Blue Food coloring (gel recommended)

Equipment

  • Large saucepan
  • 9x13 inch baking pan
  • Spatula

Method

  1. Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan with butter or cooking spray. Set aside.
  2. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until completely melted and smooth.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Add the Rice Krispies cereal and stir until well coated with the marshmallow mixture.
  4. Press the mixture evenly into the prepared baking pan using a buttered spatula or wax paper.
  5. Melt the white candy melts according to package directions. If needed, stir in vegetable shortening for a smoother consistency.
  6. Divide the melted white candy melts into two separate bowls. Add red food coloring to one bowl and blue food coloring to the other. Stir until you achieve your desired colors.
  7. Drizzle the red and blue melted candy over the Rice Krispie treats in a random pattern to resemble firecrackers.
  8. Allow the candy melts to set completely. Cut the treats into squares or rectangles.

Notes

You can also use sprinkles in red, white, and blue for added decoration. For a cleaner cut, use a sharp knife dipped in hot water.
